Red Lodge Nordic Center is closed for the season.

Brown

It's very brown in the parking lot and getting browner on the south-facing hillsides at the Nordic Center, and the weather forecast is for more of the same.
The snow that's left is great for crust cruising in the mornings but gets soft about noon.
We will be officially closed April 1. We cannot groom in warm weather even if it snows; so don't plan on it unless there's significant snow followed by a cold spell.
It was a great season! Thanks for your support. We had more skiers than ever, every month.

March weather

RL Nordic Center is experiencing warm, pleasant March weather which has been cool in the mornings and warm in the afternoons. Skate skiing has been great on firm morning snow. Classic skiing good in the pm's. Grooming has been limited due to frozen, icey morning snow and melted snow as soon as the sun hits it. Setting of tracks has been nearly impossible.
So don't expect much improvement until winter snows return and then only if the weather stays cold enough to preserve it.
Although you may ski at RL Nordic Center in marginal conditions, we may have to cease grooming if the weather does not cooperate.

Sunny

Saturday morning dawns sunny and cool (26 F) with a forecast of warm temps returning. A little rain fell last night, so Nordic Center skiing conditions will be fast this morning until warming near midday.
Groomers are out there trying to take the edge off, so skiing should be fun this weekend.
(The Far Side has not been groomed; conditions are fast and furious over there...be careful.

Cruisin'

Yes, crust cruising is a possibility at the Nordic Center in the morning when the snow is frozen! The skate skiing is good early on firm trails and open meadows. Classic skiing is less enjoyable until pm when the sun and temperatures soften the snow.
Ed has been touching up some trails with the groomer, but the window of opportunity is narrow with our temps so warm. We'll try to do more grooming for the weekend.
The Far Side has not been groomed and has some frozen ruts. Be careful over there; it's not for the faint of heart.

Spring?

Spring-like weather, temps in the 40's and more predicted...means go early if you want firm, midday if you want soft and later if you want the snow pretty mushy. We'll groom when temperatures allow, but that's a narrow window. The trails are holding up well so far.
Thanks for coming out to our 3rd annual Nordic Festival last weekend!
(No events scheduled in March).
When does the Nordic Center close? That depends totally on the weather. Stay tuned. Better yet, come out and see for yourself!

a lot of grooming

Red Lodge Nordic Center has received over a foot of new snow this past week and groomers have been busier than ever. About 10 Km of classic track are set and about 14 Km of skate lanes are groomed.
The West Fork road has also been rolled to Cascade Campground and tracks have been set out there also.

Big Snow!

We have received 10+ inches of new snow in the past 24 hours! Groomers are working on it. Skate skiing conditions are soft. Track skiing is great. Conditions should be great for the weekend with moderate temps and more snow showers predicted.
Plan to attend our 3rd annual Backcountry Film Festival at the Elks, on Broadway, downtown Red Lodge, 7:00, $5, Friday, Feb. 19. It's Winter Carnival weekend! Parade at 6:00; Love Prom with Tom Catmull & the Clerics at 9:00.
And next weekend...Nordic Ski Festival at Red Lodge Nordic Center.

Tuesday grooming

With a little more fresh snow Monday, Curt groomed the Nordic Center Tuesday. Track has been set on the "Near Side" and trails are groomed for skate skiing on the Near and the Far Side.
Temperatures are predicted to stay on the warm side with a chance of snow showers for the rest of the week.
